Hi,
I see some of you really love this XDA Flame. Why?
I was on XDAII since summer 2004 till december 2008, when my relative gave me their XDA Flame they had since summer 2007 (and used till summer 2008).
1. the batter drains so fast, even if not using it for a day.
2. if not used for more than about 60 minutes, then it stays off - buttons are not responsive, unable to get calls or sms even though the green light is still flashing)and the button on/off on top left is not working. So I miss calls/sms.
3. the mini SD card is not readable all the time (tried with 3 different cards). or when using it and is read then suddenly stop reading it as if no card there after under half and hour....taking it in and out never helps - has a mind of its wown when it likes to read the miniSD card and for how long before ignoring it is in the slot!
4. unable to do backup via pc activesyn (tools-backup/restore not there as was with XDAII), so fear of a crash and hard reset so lose all my medical books and software that took 15 hours to install!
so far I am trying to fix issue 2/3 and hope 4...then maybe it is a not bad pda..btu so far i have been unfortunate to find it not so good so far, and maybe 50-50 to go back to XDAII

Hi,
why do I love my Flame ? - because of it's uge screen, its vga-resolution, its large memory, its great sound, its usb-host-connector, its wifi features, its 3.5mm jacket, its two cameras - and of course a lot of things more... ![]()
I was on XDAII also - and I would never return. Let us see, if we can help you with your issues:
1. Battery draining: May be, your battery is rather old ? - or not treated well in the past ? - my battery is four months old and holds the flame under power for nearly 24h. You won't find more with a regular battery. The Flame is no cellular phone where you can expect several days of standby. So - if your battery is draining very quick, try to charge-discharge-charge-discharge in a few cycles to see, if the battery "comes back". If no: Replace it. I had several issues with my XDAII that where caused by damaged/low power battery.
2. That seems to be that, what we call "Sleeping Beauty" in this forum - or simply "SB". This is the main issue of our beloved Flame. Sometimes this device goes to sleep. The device becomes warm (hot), the battery drains out, and there is no change to awake the device without softreset. You can scan the forum for this issue and you will find a lot of hints, that may solve the SB-problem more or less. I think, there is no 100%-solution available at this time. I use Cotulla's 003 ROM with the "More power - more stable" function and I haven't had a single SB since that. Whithout the "More power - more stable" function I had a SB every second day. I added an automatic daily softreset at 3:00am. This also reduced the amount of SB's. It seems, that the Flame likes to be reseted a little more often to work fine...
3. Sorry - I can't help you with that. My Flame works absolutely brillant with two 2GB microSD and my 8GB microSD. I use them for storing my music and videofiles and for my backup files. If you have tried several cards, may be its a hardware issue. May be the improved microSD-driver in Cotulla's ROM would help you to get your cards work.
4. Backup - yeah ! - i understand you very well !. I was on XDAII before also and I spent a lot of hours to reinstall and restore data and programs after a hardreset on my XDAII or simply after changing the battery. My XDAII likes to do a hardreset by his own and so in the last months of my old device I had to reinstall everything nearly once a week. Since I am on Flame, I dont have this problems anymore. The Flame can run out of power to absolutely 0% and will never loose any data/programs - due to its operating system WM5 (or 6.1 if you use Cotulla's last famous ROM). But because of my "XDAII-fears" I use SpriteBackup to make complete 100% backups of the entire device. The backupfiles are written to microSD from where you can restore the whole device as it was at backup time or even a single file. Also you have a PC-Desktop-Backup-Function. You dont have to have any fear on loosing data from your flame - except you do a manually hardreset or flash your device. To get 200% of insurance: Install SpriteBackup and do a daily backup. Meanwhile I went away from daily backups, because I never (never !!) need to restore a single file since now. For now, I asked SpriteBackup to do a weekly backup on sunday morning 2:00am.
Which operating system do you have ? - "still" WM5 ? - If I were you, I would replace the battery and swith to Cotulla's famous ROM.
I hope, this can help to solve your issues and to become a "Flamelover" too ![]()

Hi Harry!
Thanks for the reply!
1. Yes, thanks. I am now using the new battery (as were 2 in the box). so hope this will be ok. I remeber with XDAII the batery lasted only 12 months and then got a 2nd one via ebay, and it lasts still. so maybe as my cousin charged his Flame everynight all night, maybe that is bad, and then not used it for 6months, before giving it to me!
2. oh so this is a typical thing. I like the term "sleeping beauty"
) What is this "Cotulla's 003 ROM" and where I get it and get to use it (do i install it or hack into registry or something?)
3. oh you can use bigger than 2gb miniSD card? In the manual it says no mor than 2gb minisd card. Do I have to do something to get it to accept a 4/8/16gb minisd card..or it does automatically?
4. Yes, my XDAII would auto hard rest every 3-30 weeks - average every 6 weeks!! Luckily would do a restore. I installed this spb backup, but backups only to the card - which would not let it do so. And didnt let me optin to backup to my pc.
Where can i get this spritebackup(i see from their website many types of spritebackups -which one to backup to pc is best via flame?) from that will let me backup to pc, please?
the OS is mobile 5 (OS 5.1.422 - build 15633.3.2.0)
Processor ARM920T PXA27X
ROM: WWE_RC1070309
Boot Loader Vesion V2.2C601

PS:
1. I am on windows 5 - i found this oo3 coutalla..but from what i gather from (http://xdaflameusers.com/viewtopic.php?id=816.), it is for windows 6.1 only..so not sure if will help me..i see only mk4..but see some say it does help or does not help SB..and if does then the batter is drained in 10 minutes.
2. if i install new ROM will all my software on flame be erased? If so if I copy the data and registry to my pc and then after installing the new ROM (003 coutella or mk4 - if fixes sb), and copy back the sotware data and registry..will that work?

@doct1066
You seems to have many speed typing typo.
You are also posting many similar issues / problem almost everywhere on the board.
Similar topics should restrict to similar thread and not start a new thread, eg, the Lantern software.
By the way, there are not many topics here, and there is a "Show Recent Post" function you can use.
I will closed some of the threads.

I was on Xda IIs as well and agree 100% with OldHarry. I've bought my second Flame after "loose" the first one and I'm not crazy... Compared with Xda IIs (Blue Angel), the Flame is not as fast as that but its incredible VGA screen is a luxury with a cost: velocity and battery drain.
SB is the Original Sin of this device, but googling you can see that there are some other devices with the same problem. As OldHArry does, I use Cotulla's 3 with the "More power - more stable" function ON when I need to guarantee being on line (waiting for a professional call, for instance).
Regarding backups, on Xda IIs (Windows 2003, do you remember?) it was a must to avoid loose information if battery drains to zero (I had this problem continuously loosing important information, so I had backups every 12 hours!!). On WM5 or WM6 that's impossible . SpriteBackup is a very reliable program. A schedule of one backup every week on the SD card is enought.

Hi cwkj!/6.1
sorry for posting similar issues in different forums. got one SB issue, one backup, one miniSD card issue, one rom issue, one wm5-wm6/6/1 if possible issue and how..some i thougth is for software, other hardware, other is something else
i was not sure to put them together or will confuse many or new thread for each one. esp for future reference people would be looking for a specific issue to find many issues in one thread so confuse them also. ![]()
Hi XDAlover!
I know my cousin had problems with XDAIIs as he would relish overuse it and so drain the batter (forgetting to recharge it alot) and come hay and shine, had to restore...so he moved to Flame till last summer..now he is a traitor and got a nokia!
i tried to use the spritebackup to backup to my pc, but asks to ahve sprite pc backup on my pc..i tried to google, mininova, to find this sprite manager pc backup..but cannot find it no where - not even mentiond on official spritebackup website! hmm

You can find detailed information about Cotulla's famous ROM right here: http://xdaflameusers.com/viewtopic.php?id=1150

Yes - the manual is right ! - with WM5 you can only use 2GB cards. But Cotulla (and some other ROM-cookers also...) have provided us some wonderfull small applications to use > 2GB in the Flame. I use a 8 GB with absolutly no trouble.
But remember: You cannot use a microSD larger than 2GB to flash any ROMS. To flash ROMS you must use a microSD card with 2GB or less !!!! - otherwise flashing will fail !!!. Follow the link above to Cotulla's threat and there is another link to a detailed descriptoin how to flash Flame's ROM. It's simple and self declaring. I read it one time - flashed my Flame - and I am happy since this...
And there is a other feature of our beloved device that you can connect ANY USB-device through the USB-host-connector using the special cable which is delivered with the Flame. With this cable you can connect e.g. USB-Sticks directly to the Flame or a external HDD. I've tested it with my 500GB externel HDD (of course, you need a seperate power supply for the HDD). I've formated the HDD with FAT32 and connected it to the Flame. Immediatly the drive appears in Flame's file explorer and you can copy files from/to the external HDD as you know it from your PC. So, no more fear of loosing data.

hi harry!
thanks for the info. really appreciate it..we need people like u in the UK NHS medical system!
wow..so guys here make things to improve the XDA Flame with these new roms e.g bigger sd cards. it seems like XDA Flame capibility is then restricted by microsoft and/or by the makers of Flame! like germans cars in uk all go to only 155 mph thoguth can do mover this limit. ![]()
I am keeping my old XDAII.its a wonderful machine...thining to give to someone else in the family.
i got spirtebackup 6.50 also...sadly it is asking for a sprite pc manager prograom on my pc to backup directly yo my pc - I am unable to find this "sprite pc manager " program either via google, mininova, or on their offical website any mention of it! are you able to backup direct to your pc with the spritebackup,. or does it also, in the process, as for you to install on the pc sprite pc manager?

Hi Doc,
sorry - I don't understand your issue.
If you download the SetupSpriteBackup65.exe (larger than 10MB) and start it on your PC you will run through a installation routine and after finish you will find a applicatoin on your pc under "Start - Programs - Sprite Mobile - Sprite Backup - Sprite Backup PC Manager... Voilą...
You have posted a lot of posts and I understand you very well, because I was in trouble also when switching from XDAII to Flame, because I have to trust my device in daily work too. May be you should cool down a little - you should keep your XDAII for your doc's work and "build up" your Flame step by step. I can give you the hint to:
1. sit back - relax - keep your XDAII
2. have a glass of good scotch whisky
3. solve your problem with your 2GB microSD card (may be by purchasing a 1GB card to test if you have similar problems with it)
4. after surely have a microSD that you can trust, you should upgrade to WM6.1 (Cotulla's - if you ask me)
5. forget everything about restoring data/programs from OS version X - reflashing to OS version Y - restoring data/programs from OS version X - this CAN NOT work.
6. after flashing to WM6.1 do not install all your software. Try to test out if your Flame runs as you expected - and then - step by step - install your apps and data - by the way: Why do you need 15 hours to install your software ?
7. become a Flame-lover too...
Cheers

hi harry!
yes ur right..ive take a back seat and wont use flame till i fix this SB issue now!
) sadly as a good doctor i dont drink alcohol, nor cafffeinated or fizzy drinks, but lots of wate will help me while watching Mr Bean!
its nice to know im no the only one with this problem with a new Flame!
So far love the remote control, and the radio....big screen is important to read the medical software books on it.
2 cameras is handy also.
oh from minni nova site, my spritebackup was in a CAB file and installed directly in the Flame.
but yes will resintall manually all my programs...only once i am sure im happy with the Flame this time..... if i can flash successfull!!!
As today i tried to flash with the diskimage.nbo for either cotulla 003 (with the passfward file on minisd card also), and then mk4 wm5 , on my miniSD card 2gb - when i did a hard reset, i left my figners on the softkey buttons till the screen it was to update rom with the diskimage on the sd card..but after 2-3 seconds that screen went away and the O2 screen came up and then went trough the normal hard reset.
any ideas?
I am lost for words..the instructions are very easy...picked up the file from my miniSD card yet did not update the rom..any reason why?
i see after i uni stalled both spb mobile and spb pocket plus no problems to read my mini SD card, as my cousin also never had thir problem, but he never used spb software...he is a resco person.
so rom...i followed the instructions from:

you tried to flash on battery power or on ac power ?

Hi Harry!
oh yes...i see the non CAD file for spritebackup is bigger - thanks! I now can backup to my pc!
worked much faster than AS with XDAII! shame windows dont have something like spritebackup as standard in the WM5/6/6.1 ![]()
good question! I had the flame connected to my laptop.....should i do it to ac power instead of laptop? maybe the power to flash is not enough via laptop? im now going to try with ac power..lets see what happens..will report back! ![]()
Offline
No good even to ac adapator -
do a hard reset
says "update reboot.ndo (something here) SD card" on the screen like in the instruction (how to flash a rom in the thread) and a 2-3 seconds later goes to 02 welcome screen.
just done it again....the same.
my Flame does not want to be flashed..its being very british conservative!! Too much top quality whisky which you recommended harry ![]()
dozen times now tried to do a flash for cotulla 003 and wm5-mk4 rom...same problem.
battery is full charged..is on ac adaptor.![]()

Strange ! - very strange...
So your Flame starts the flash-process and after a few seconds he decides to do a regular hardreset ?
That sounds as your Flame would not recognize the files on your microSD. Surely you have compared and checked the filenames "diskimage.nb0" and "1xdtgklo.kez" and - what was my fault a few months ago - you are sure, that your kez-file is a NULL-file with NOTHING in and a file size of zero ?
Be sure - your Flame can be reflashed - we just have to look after the right way, to tell him, that he WANTS to be flashed... ![]()
OldHarry

...and you are sure, that you haven't any other file-extensions at both files ?
Sometimes, if you haven't selected the right option in Windows (I dont know, how this option is spelled in english windows versions) the Windows-OS "adds" a "invisible" file-extension. If so, your file in Windows explorer looks like "1xdtgklo.kez" - but in reality its name is "1xdtgklo.kez.txt".
Sorry that I asked you this way - I don't you to shame, but I don't know how familiar you are with windows file management.![]()

Hi Harry!
its ok...when it comes to Flame and technology,, you can shame me black and blue! ![]()
yes it is very strange. ..yes starts the flash process as in the picture in the instructions..but 2-3 seconds then goes to 02 welcome screen.
cotulla 003 yes is with diskimage.nbo and 1xdtgklo.kez. mk4 is with just diskimage.nbo.
just had a look at pc windows explorer:
1. 1xdtgklo.kez a KEX file 0 bytes - in properties "type of file - KEZ"
2. diskimage.nb0 a NBO file 64,000kbytes - in properties "type of file - NBO"
when i unzipped cotulla 003 and extract the 2 files, it says diskimage.nbo and 1xdtgklo.kez... This kez file is 0bytes. How do I check if windows has put a "txt" extension and to remove it?
hmm well it gave that message about diskimage on the sd card, so i presume it saw the sd card and read the file is there, right? or no? ( my head down in shame ) ![]()
yes maybe my Flame has been blocked to flash?!!
Offline
Hi Doc,
I am really sure, that your problem - excuse me: - your Flame's problem is, that he doesnt recognize well the files on the microSD. As already other users has reported, not every microSD card is properly formatted. Have you tried to reformat your card using the panasonic format program from http://xdaflameusers.com/viewtopic.php?id=344 ?
Cheers

Hi oldharry! (who looks young in the foto ) ![]()
yes sadly tried to no avail..the panasoic formatter program does not even recognise the minisd card in its SD adaptor (into my HP laptop whcih has a 7-in-1 slot machine - SD.MMS.Pro.MMC.SM.XD)
it is a sandisk 2gb card...i tried to format it in its SD card adaptor and put it into my HP laptop to format it...but either via windows explorer (right click the SD card and click format) or via the panasonic formatter software recommended on the instructinons - it does not recongise my small miniSD card.
is it possible to format it via the pocket pc, then in the SD adapator (and then put it into the PC slot?).
Off to have lunch after 15 hours on shift so far! had lunch at 6pm again and at midnight will have supper!

Try another SD's Brand. Kingston always works OK with my Flames!! Good Luck

Hi xdalover!
sandisk is not a goood brand? kingston is the best to get?
Offline
Sandisk is a good brand, I only suggest you the brand that suits me. Use Panasonic to format the SD. Try the Nikita's Rom first , because on his Zip there are both files (Not in Cotulla's, I think). Copy them on the formated SD . Insert SD . Confirm that you can see both files with the File Explorer. Press both softkey buttons firmly together. Then KEEPING pressing both buttons, insert the stick in the RESET hole for two seconds. Then KEEPING still pressing both buttons, retire the stick. Depress both bottons. Good luck! (Sorry for my english...)

Hi XDALover!
it is strange that
1. my pc recognises the SD adaptor (with minisd card in it), in the slot..but wont open whats in the miniSD card..or format it
2. the panasonic formatter does not recongise my miniSD card in the pc slot at all!
but in the Flame wa able to transfer the diskimage to miniSD card directly...so not sure what is going on...when i flash the first flash screen comes up for 2-3 seconds..but then goes away and 02 welcome screen comes!
Offline
- one thing that has occured to me.......on the miniSD card, maybe i should have nothing on it but ONLY the diskimage.nbo file and nothing else like my other documents etc?..maybe that is why after 2-3 seconds the rom does not flash?
